Kaplan competes with an increasing number of online degree programs. Registering and retaining students in their programs is critical to their success. But students were dropping out of Kaplan programs at an alarming rate. Through student feedback and drop-out rate analysis, they identified ‘gateway’ courses that were pivotal for student retention.
LetterPress worked with Kaplan to make a plan for improving the quality of students’ learning experience in these courses. We created a course quality assessment instrument and used it to evaluate the quality of gateway courses. Using the results of these assessments we identified how to significantly improve each course. We then created a new instructional template to improve the learning across all courses.
Working with Kaplan’s subject matter experts we used the templates to redesigned three model courses. Other design teams used these courses as examples of how to redesign a course for a better user experience and improved learning. When these model courses were rolled out, the student success rates improved and drop-out rates declined.
